All I Want

It would sound something like this:

“Hi, Aim! How’s your day?”

“Good, Dad. Have you checked your mail yet?”

“No, not yet.”

“Go look in your mailbox.”

“Okaaaay . . .” Sound of door opening. Tuneless whistling through teeth.
.
“Hm, I got a purty magazine.”

“That’s it! Look on page thirty. I wrote you something.”

“What, in here?” Sound of pages turning.

Pause.

“Well would you look at that.”

“Look at that!”

“Looks like you’ve hit the big time now, Aimer Lou!”

“Ha ha. Go ahead, read it.”

“What, now? With you on the line?”

“Sure, I’ll wait.”

“Well, okay then, let me just take a seat here on the porch . . . look at that picture, that guy’s got hair!”

“I know!”

“Okay, here I go.”

Silence.

“Hm.”

Silence.

“Heh.”

Silence.

Sniff.

Silence.

Throat clearing.

Strangled laugh.

“Boy, I might have to call you back, Aim. Your old dad’s turned into a boob again.”

“That’s okay, Dad. I know how you are.”

Throat clearing.

“Well . . . wow. This is really somethin’.”

“It’s for you, Dad.”

Silence.

“Well, thanks.”

Sniff.

“I’m sure proud of you, Aim, you know that?”

Pause.

Sniff.

“Yeah.”

“Good.”

  1. The magazine had been staring at me for a few days--that photo of a smiling refugee girl. I felt I should read the article about refugees, considering the push the Church has made for it, and that Sister Burton and Elder Kearon spoke about it in General Conference. I finally found the time, and after reading it, I thought, "I wonder who wrote this article." I looked at the photo of the author, "Hmm. Well, I don't know her." I flipped through another page or two. "Hmm," I thought, "an article about fathers, football, and fall. ... I wonder who wrote this." I look at the picture. "Whoa! She looks familiar. What's her name?" as I look at her name. "Wait a minute! That's Amy -----, the same Amy that hung out with Kyler, Sarah, and me (the lowly sophomore) 21 or 22 years ago!"

Hi, Amy! It has been a long time. (I never thought I would be old enough to say, 'I did that 21 years ago,' but here I am.) That was a great article you wrote. I wish I could write like that.
